The place
Agoura Hills is a city in the Santa Monica Mountains region of Los Angeles County, in the eastern Conejo Valley between the Simi Hills and the Santa Monica Mountains, about 35 miles northwest of Downtown Los Angeles. It is called the Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and Ladyface Mountain, at 2,031 feet, stands over the west side of the valley.
The Reyes Adobe, the old ranch headquarters of Rancho Las Virgenes, sits in the center of town as part of a museum. In the 1920s Paramount Pictures filmed westerns on its ranch here and the area was briefly called Picture City, until a 1927 post office vote chose Agoura, a spelling of the name of local sheep rancher Pierre Agoure. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing spans the Ventura Freeway at Liberty Canyon.
