The place
Most of Newbury Park lies within western Thousand Oaks, where it makes up about 40 percent of the city’s land area and all of ZIP code 91320. It runs from Lynn Road west to the Conejo Grade, with Hill Canyon and the Conejo Canyons Open Space to the north and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south, where Boney Mountain and the Rancho Sierra Vista park lands sit at its southern edge.
The town is named for Egbert Starr Newbury, who bought land here in the 1870s, became the Conejo Valley’s first postmaster in 1875 and thought the valley looked like a park. Trails from Rancho Sierra Vista lead through Point Mugu State Park to the Pacific, and the Stagecoach Inn Museum displays mammoth fossils found locally in 1961 and 1971.
