The place
Westlake Village sits on the western edge of Los Angeles County, right on the Ventura County line and about 9 miles inland from the Pacific. The city takes its name from the master planned community built around Westlake Lake, and about two thirds of that original community lies across the line in Thousand Oaks. Open space and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area wrap around much of the city.
The land became part of Rancho Simi in 1795, and from 1881 the Russell brothers ran cattle here; later owners also used it as a movie ranch. In 1963 the American Hawaiian Steamship Company bought the 12,000 acre ranch and commissioned a master plan for a "city in the country," with the lake as its focal point. The Los Angeles County side incorporated as Westlake Village in 1981.
