The place
Thousand Oaks is the central city of the Conejo Valley in southeastern Ventura County, about 40 miles from Downtown Los Angeles and 12 miles from the Pacific. It is named for its oak trees, which number in the tens of thousands, and the valley is framed by the Simi Hills, the Conejo Mountains, Mount Clef Ridge and the Santa Monica Mountains.
About a third of the city is protected open space, with roughly 150 miles of trails for hiking, biking and riding. Wildwood Regional Park, home to Paradise Falls, lies within the city limits. The name Thousand Oaks won a local naming contest in the 1920s, and the city incorporated in 1964.
